This gave the allies an early advantage in the War of 3039, but improvements in ECM on both sides soon countered this new technology rendering it obsolete. Listen-Kill Warheads included new guidance systems which homed in on the EM emissions of BattleMechs. One of the AFFS/LCAF first joint military research projects to come to fruition was the Listen-Kill missile system. Field upgrades were made to many old Succession War BattleMech designs, although very few new Mechs were constructed using the new Endosteel internal structure. Although they couldn’t be integrated into the BattleMech’s engine unlike the Star Leagues Double Heatsinks, they could be added in addition. Both successor states had developed, independent of the Helm Memory Core’s data (although there was also a great deal of espionage involved) a new type of heat sink called a Freezer.
The NAIS also managed to develop prototype models of the Gauss Rifle, Ultra and LB-X Autocannons. Some prototype technologies were developed as a direct result of the Helm Memory Core such as: Extended Ranger Large Lasers and Medium Pulse Lasers, as well as Endosteel internal structure and Ferro Fibrous armour. Over the years following the Grey Death Legions recovery of the Helm Memory Core, the Federated Suns New Avalon Institute of Science (NAIS) and Draconis Combine had both been making steady technological advancements. In reality, the new superpower of the Federated Commonwealth was hell-bent on finding an excuse to use its new military might. Rhetoric from both sides grew in intensity with Hanse Davion making a public proclamation against the barbaric treatment of the populace on worlds previously controlled by the Federated Suns. Within 24 hours the self-proclaimed “patriotic thief”, whose identity was never discovered, surrendered the car to be found by the police, with a note assuring officials that the contents of the briefcase had not been copied or shared in any way.

An immediate massive security lockdown of the entire planet (including the HPG going offline for unspecified technical reasons) followed. Two weeks before the start of the war, a car was stolen on Robinson with a briefcase containing detailed invasion plans. The War of 3039 was not a stealth attack or a surprise war, everyone knew it was coming. On the 16th of April 3039 a wave of Federated Commonwealth JumpShips appeared in several key systems in the Draconis Combine – the War of 3039 had begun.
